Tri-Fold 6-Ring Binders

I recently had three different tri-fold binders in my possession by Filofax, Gigliodoro, and Il Bisonte. It seemed the perfect opportunity to take comparison photos.

First, the personal Filofax Knightsbridge is made of fine lambskin leather and has silver hardware. This binder is by far the softest I have ever owned. On the left inside, there is a full length pocket opening on the left edge, as well as eight card slots. On the right inside, there is a full length zippered pocket and another full length open pocket behind that. The Knightsbridge also has ring protectors and two pen loops. It closes with a single snap. This is a discontinued binder made in approximately 1999.

Next, the medium Gigliodoro 3-Way is made of genuine calf leather and has gold hardware. This binder is firm and structured, and has a generous number of pockets and slots. I counted a total of nine. The fold on this one is wider and meets the rings when closed. The Gigliodoro has one pen loop on the right inside. It closes with one magnetic snap. This binder was a limited edition and recently sold out by Luxecadeautjes.nl.

Finally, the Il Bisonte INSIDER is made of cowhide, and has brass hardware and gold rings. This binder has a rugged texture and has no filler whatsoever. On the left inside, there are three card slots and a full length pocket. On the right inside, there is a full length zippered pocket. Rather than a pen loop, the INSIDER has a single internal pen slot on the inside right fold. It closes with two snaps. This binder is still available from Il Bisonte, either in its storefronts or online.

Personally, the Il Bisonte INSIDER is one of my favorite binders, second only to my medium Gillio Compagnas (not shown here). It sits wonderfully in hand and I have no worry throwing it in my bag.

Note: I purchased all three of these binders pre-owned and let go of the Gigliodoro 3-Way since these pictures were taken.

The Gardener's Filofax System

I was fortunate to find this 1985 Gardener's Filofax System with its original inserts. The cover of the binder is vinyl, which is seemingly better to have than leather when planning and working in the garden. The outside texture is ribbed and the clasp is magnetic.

The inside left is stamped, "THE GARDEN BOOK CLUB" and has a secretarial pocket. The inside right is stamped, "THE BRITISH FILOFAX SYSTEM MADE IN ENGLAND" and has a gusseted pocket.

This planner includes a generous number of inserts. There are five index dividers with tabs: Gardener's Reference; Expenses; Garden Planning; Diary; and Addresses. It also has A-Z dividers with two letters per tab.

I read that Filofax used to carry a wide variety of inserts in the 80's relating to different hobbies and interests; however, this is the first that I have seen where an entire organizer was created for a specific purpose. Considering how many special-interest inserts were sold, I wonder where they are all hiding now.

Filofax Enigma

These are the Filofax Enigma organizers in Brindle and Vermilion. I've had the brindle for quite some time and was recently able to add the vermilion red to complete this duo collection. The Enigma is one of those binders that you either love it or hate it.

Outside: The binders have an interesting snake print design and it appears that no two patterns are exactly the same. The texture is smooth and cushiony, and the leather feels as though it has a protective coating. The branded 'f' can be found at the bottom of the spine and on the silver hardware of the clasp.

Interior: The Enigma lays completely flat upon opening. The covers are flexible rather than stiff which allows easy access to the pockets. On the inside left, there are six card slots, a vertical pocket, and vertical zipper pocket. On the inside right, there's a full length gusseted pocket with snap closure. The rings measure 23 mm.

The Enigma has a high-end feel and has earned a place in my collection. If I could only keep one? It would be the vermilion because of its striking colors. Luckily, I don't have to choose.

The long elusive Ascot in blue arrived this week. I bought it as "new old stock" (NOS), meaning it's from older retail stock that wasn't previously sold.

Filofax Pens, et al.

Here are some Filofax brand pens, old and new. It's interesting that the two older pens (pictured in the center) are slimmer, just like the pen loops in older binders. The two newer pens are both shorter and thicker, probably so they can fit in mini size binders without protruding over the top. All of these pens arrived in pre-owned organizers that I purchased.

The Filofax keychain on the right was gifted when I purchased new old stock binders from Bouteia. It's heavy, opens on a hinge and closes with a magnet, and can hold pictures inside much like a locket.

These next pens are ones that I purchased directly from "mom and pop" stationery and pen stores. I was able to touch and actually write with them before deciding what to buy. They may cost a bit more than online shopping, but the exemplary customer service is priceless. If you ever get a chance, visit Warwick's in La Jolla CA and Penchetta Pens in Scottsdale AZ.

And, of course, lots of inexpensive Pilot pens i.e. Frixion Clicker 0.7, Frixion Ball Slim 0.38, Hi-Tec-C Coleto Me, and Precise V5. I also use a Sharpie and a washi-tape pen. These all came from online orders and box stores.
